Chapter Eight

Margot stood outside a shop and wondered if anything inside was cheap enough that she could buy a few souvenirs for her friends back home. She had left the hotel far earlier than she needed to and arrived on the street where Claudia’ place lay sooner than she wanted. Nancy might not be ready.

Odds had already left her bag and wandered off. Since the pace of this small tourist area was still slower than New York, she didn’t worry about him. She moved on to a street vendor selling fruit and began looking through the offerings. Perhaps Lyle needed more fruit in his diet. Vitamin C might chase out the effects of his sickness. They weren’t getting any younger, so they had to be careful.

Margot moved to inspect the oranges, which sat on the cart nearest to the street. Cars trundled along the road pretty regularly. A truck passed by, and smoke from the tailpipe blew up to cover the fruit. Margot winced. Maybe Lyle didn’t need this fruit after all.

She turned to move on, but something bumped her. From the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a long lightweight coat and a hood over the person’s head. Far too hot in this weather no matter the material. Margot lost her footing. Her arm throbbed because the person had hit her pretty hard. She staggered sideways, and just a couple steps would send her into traffic. She tried to catch herself, but she was never the most coordinated woman.

“Margot!”

Strong hands grabbed her, and she was jerked forward to bump into Nancy’s generous bosom. Margot held onto her friend while she righted herself and panted. “That was close. Oh, Nancy, you saved my life.”

All the color had left Nancy’s face as she held onto Margot’s arm and led her to the sidewalk. She swiveled her head back and forth, scanning the area. Margot felt her friend’s trembling as she held onto Margot.

“Let’s go, Margot. We need to go back home now!”

Margot hesitated. She too looked around, curious about what had come over Nancy. After all, it was her who’d just been almost flattened in the street. Yet, Nancy was spooked. Margot patted her hand. “I’m fine, dear. We’re early, but why don’t we go ahead and have dinner now? The food will calm you.”

Nancy hesitated. “What I wouldn’t give to be back in my apartment with a nice plate of my own food, Margot. But okay, since you’re here, I guess we can go ahead. Just be careful. I beg you.”

They found a reasonably priced restaurant. Margot had refused Lyle’s paying for dinner at first, but then he insisted she let him treat Nancy to dinner. She couldn’t tell him no if that’s what he wanted to do. He did refuse to come along though, feeling it would be better if she convinced Nancy to come home on her own.

Nancy ordered halibut with caramelized cauliflower, and Margot chose the same because it sounded good, and she wanted to keep things simple.
